# Harry Rolnick

**Harry Rolnick** is an American author, editor and music critic. His writing often examines [Asian](/source/Asia) lifestyles and culinary traditions.

*Eating Out In China* (1979) was the first book to explore [People's Republic](/source/People's_Republic) restaurants. His other restaurant guides, to [Hong Kong](/source/Hong_Kong), [Bangkok](/source/Bangkok) and [Macau](/source/Macau), prompted [Alan Levy](/source/Alan_Levy) to write in *The Foodie’s Guide to the World*, "Nobody eats in Asia without consulting Harry Rolnick first".

Rolnick has written a history of [coffee](/source/Coffee) to promote the [Melitta](/source/Melitta) brand, a guide to [feng shui](/source/Feng_shui), and a social history of [Macau](/source/Macau).[1] He also co-authored *The Chinese Gourmet* with William Mark.

A native of [New York](/source/New_York_City), Rolnick was a [Merchant Marine](/source/United_States_Merchant_Marine) before taking residence in [Thailand](/source/Thailand), where he was one of the first editors of the [Bangkok Post](/source/Bangkok_Post) and later [Hong Kong](/source/Hong_Kong), from where he traveled throughout Asia and [East Africa](/source/East_Africa) for two decades.

He has written articles for *[Lonely Planet](/source/Lonely_Planet)*, *[Newsweek](/source/Newsweek)*, *[International Herald Tribune](/source/International_Herald_Tribune)*, *[Wall Street Journal](/source/Wall_Street_Journal)*, *[Travel & Leisure](/source/Travel_%26_Leisure)*, *[GEO](/source/GEO_(magazine))* and many other publications.[1] In 1998, he edited the first English-language lifestyle magazine in [Budapest](/source/Budapest), before returning to [Manhattan](/source/Manhattan). Rolnick's most recent book is *Spice Chronicles: Exotic Tales of a Hungry Traveler* (2008, Seven Locks Press).

Rolnick is also a New York correspondent for ConcertoNet.com, a classical music review site.[2]
