# Harry Burnand

New Zealand engineer and sawmiller

**John Henry Davis Burnand** (2 December 1850 – 25 March 1919), known as **Harry Burnand**, was a New Zealand [engineer](/source/Engineer) and [sawmiller](/source/Sawmill). He was born in [London](/source/London), England on 2 December 1850.[1]

He was an engineer at [Poro-o-tarao](/source/Poro-O-Tarao_railway_station) tunnel from 1887.[2]

He was a director of [Ellis and Burnand](/source/Ellis_and_Burnand) from 1903,[3] formed with [John William Ellis](/source/John_William_Ellis), which was initially based in [Ōtorohanga](/source/%C5%8Ctorohanga). The company had sawmills and logging railways, such as the [Ellis and Burnand Tramway, Ongarue](/source/Ellis_and_Burnand_Tramway%2C_Ongarue), in many surrounding areas. It later became part of the company now trading as [PlaceMakers](/source/PlaceMakers).[4]

His younger son, Harry, was killed in France in 1917 during the First World War.[5]

He died suddenly at [Mangapehi](/source/Mangapehi_River) and is buried in [Taumarunui](/source/Taumarunui) Cemetery.[3] He had been suffering from heart problems.[6] An obituary said he was 65 years old.[7]
