# Harold Deters

**Harold Lee Deters** (born January 16, 1944) is an American former professional [football](/source/American_football) player who was a [placekicker](/source/Placekicker) for the [Dallas Cowboys](/source/Dallas_Cowboys) of the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL). He played [college football](/source/College_football) for the [NC State Wolfpack](/source/NC_State_Wolfpack_football).

## Early years

Deters attended Grainger High School. He accepted a football scholarship from [North Carolina State University](/source/North_Carolina_State_University). As a senior, he made 10 out of 21 [field goals](/source/Field_goal).

He set 5 [Atlantic Coast Conference](/source/Atlantic_Coast_Conference) [field goal](/source/Field_goal) records, finishing his college career with 21 out of 42 [field goals](/source/Field_goal) made and didn't miss any [extra point](/source/Extra_point) attempt.

## Professional career

Deters was selected by the [Dallas Cowboys](/source/Dallas_Cowboys) in the twelfth round (312th overall) of the [1967 NFL/AFL draft](/source/1967_NFL/AFL_draft). He began the season as the starter at [placekicker](/source/Placekicker), but made only one out of four [field goals](/source/Field_goal) and was placed on the [taxi squad](/source/Taxi_squad) after the third game against the [Los Angeles Rams](/source/Los_Angeles_Rams) on November 15.[1] He retired at the end of the season to become a teacher.[2]
