'''Harold Briercliffe''' (1910-1994) was an English author of a series of [cycle touring](/source/cycle_touring) guides. These were a spin-off from the magazine ''Cycling'' (a magazine now published as ''[Cycling Weekly](/source/Cycling_Weekly)''). They were cheaply made volumes with attractive colour print covers, designed to be kept in the pocket of [saddlebag](/source/saddlebag)s.<ref>[http://www.cycling-books.com/Cycle_Touring_Guides_Harold_Briercliffe.htm Cycling-books.com: Cycling Touring Guides, Howard Briercliffe (1947 - 1950)] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101223122016/http://www.cycling-books.com/Cycle_Touring_Guides_Harold_Briercliffe.htm |date=23 December 2010 }} Retrieved 14 September 2010</ref>

In 2010, [Clare Balding](/source/Clare_Balding) presented a [BBC TV](/source/BBC_TV) series called Britain By Bike that retraced some of Briercliffe's routes using his old [Dawes Super Galaxy](/source/Dawes_Galaxy).<ref>[https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tg2q0 BBC Britain by Bike:The Cotswolds (''Broadcast 23rd August 2010''] Retrieved 14 September 2010</ref>

As a result of the publicity arising from Clare Balding's television series, the popularity of the books rose greatly and three (north, south and central England) were republished by [Batsford Books](/source/Batsford_Books) in 2012; with brief additions by [Mark Jarman](/source/Mark_Jarman_(cyclist)) and [Sustrans](/source/Sustrans) indicating that alternative routes exist to those suggested by Harold Briercliffe where those routes have become subject to heavy road traffic.
