After the international success of her song "[Two of Hearts](/source/Two_of_Hearts_(song))" and debut album ''[Better Than Heaven](/source/Better_Than_Heaven)'' (1986), Swain began working on her sophomore record. She again collaborated with her bandmates from [SSQ](/source/SSQ_(band)). Produced by [Jon St. James](/source/Jon_St._James), ''Hard Machine'' is a [dance-pop](/source/dance-pop) album, which is influenced by [new wave](/source/New_wave_music), [contemporary R&B](/source/contemporary_R%26B) and [rock](/source/Rock_music) music.

Three singles were released from the album.
