This article is about the Antarctic island. For the Arctic Island shared by Denmark and Canada, see [Hans Island](/source/Hans_Island).

**Hansen Island** ([67°6′S 67°37′W / 67.100°S 67.617°W / -67.100; -67.617](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Hansen_Island&params=67_6_S_67_37_W_source:GNIS)) is an island 6 nautical miles (11 km) long and 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide, lying immediately north of [The Gullet](/source/The_Gullet) at the head of [Hanusse Bay](/source/Hanusse_Bay), off the west coast of [Graham Land](/source/Graham_Land), Antarctica. It was first surveyed in 1936 by the [British Graham Land Expedition](/source/British_Graham_Land_Expedition) (BGLE) under [John Rymill](/source/John_Rymill), who used the provisional name "North Island" for this feature. The island was resurveyed in 1948 by the [Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey](/source/Falkland_Islands_Dependencies_Survey), and was renamed in 1954 by the [UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee](/source/UK_Antarctic_Place-Names_Committee) for [Leganger H. Hansen](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Leganger_H._Hansen&action=edit&redlink=1), manager at Messrs. [Christian Salvesen](/source/Christian_Salvesen)'s whaling station at [Leith Harbor](/source/Leith_Harbor), [South Georgia](/source/South_Georgia_Island), 1916–37, who gave great assistance to the BGLE, 1934–37.[2]
