# Hans Hopf

**Hans Hopf** (August 2, 1916, [Nuremberg](/source/Nuremberg) – June 25, 1993, [Munich](/source/Munich)) was a German operatic [tenor](/source/Tenor), one of the leading [heldentenors](/source/Heldentenor) of the immediate postwar period. He sang Walther von Stolzing in the [Bayreuth Festival](/source/Bayreuth_Festival)'s [*Die Meistersinger*](/source/Die_Meistersinger_von_N%C3%BCrnberg), in 1951 and again in 1952. He would also sing Siegfried at Bayreuth from 1960–1963.[1]

He studied in [Munich](/source/Munich) with Paul Bender, and made his stage debut with a touring opera ensemble, as [Pinkerton](/source/Madama_Butterfly), in 1936. He then sang in [Augsburg](/source/Augsburg) (1939–42), [Dresden](/source/Dresden) (1942–43), and [Oslo](/source/Oslo) (1943–44). He joined the [Berlin State Opera](/source/Berlin_State_Opera) in 1946, and the [Munich State Opera](/source/Munich_State_Opera), in 1949. He appeared in [Bayreuth](/source/Bayreuth) in 1951, as [Walther](/source/Die_Meistersinger), returning as [Siegmund](/source/Die_Walk%C3%BCre), [Siegfried](/source/Siegfried_(opera)) (in 1960), [Tannhäuser](/source/Tannh%C3%A4user_(opera)), and [Parsifal](/source/Parsifal) (in 1952). At Bayreuth in 1951 he took part in a performance of [Beethoven](/source/Ludwig_van_Beethoven)'s [9th Symphony](/source/Symphony_No._9_(Beethoven)) conducted by [Wilhelm Furtwängler](/source/Wilhelm_Furtw%C3%A4ngler). He sang [Max](/source/Der_Freisch%C3%BCtz) at the [Salzburg Festival](/source/Salzburg_Festival) in 1954. He made guest appearances in Milan, London, New York, and Buenos Aires. He sang both Siegfrieds in the early 1960s at Bayreuth, the Met, and elsewhere, recording Tannhäuser twice in 1960.

A singer with a sturdy and reliable voice, Hopf also won acclaim in a number of non-Wagnerian operas notably [Verdi](/source/Verdi)'s *[Otello](/source/Otello)*, and the Emperor in *[Die Frau ohne Schatten](/source/Die_Frau_ohne_Schatten)*.
