Wiedemann was born in [Bremen](/source/Bremen). His father was a medical practitioner. His mother came from a medical family. Wiedemann studied medicine at the [University of Freiburg](/source/University_of_Freiburg), the [Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München](/source/Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit%C3%A4t_M%C3%BCnchen), the [University of Hamburg](/source/University_of_Hamburg), the [University of Lausanne](/source/University_of_Lausanne) and the [University of Jena](/source/University_of_Jena).

In 1940, Wiedemann passed the state examination. With a doctoral thesis with [Yusuf Ibrahim](/source/Yusuf_Ibrahim_(doctor)) he was appointed doctor of medicine in 1941 at the University of Jena.<ref>Dissertation: ''Zur Frage der kindlichen Bleivergiftung (Über einen Fall tödlich verlaufener Bleieklampsie und zwei Fälle von Bleieinwirkung bei Kleinkindern)''.</ref> At the University of Jena, he wrote and researched [jaundice](/source/jaundice).<ref>''Der konstitutionelle, familiäre, hämolytische Ikterus im Kindesalter'' (1946).</ref> He continued with specialist training in [Bremen](/source/Bremen), [Bonn](/source/Bonn) and [Münster](/source/M%C3%BCnster).<ref>Fritz Hilgenberg: ''Erlebte Kinderheilkunde. Münster 1992, S. 32–37.</ref> As director of the Krefeld Children's Hospital, Wiedemann was one of the first to recognise the fatal side effects of [thalidomide](/source/thalidomide). While initially considered safe, thalidomide was responsible for [teratogenic](/source/Teratology) deformities in children born after their mothers used it during pregnancies, prior to the third trimester.
