**Hanover** is an [unincorporated](/source/Unincorporated_area#United_States) [census-designated place](/source/Census-designated_place) located in the town of [Plymouth, Rock County, Wisconsin](/source/Plymouth%2C_Rock_County%2C_Wisconsin), United States. It is west of [Janesville](/source/Janesville%2C_Wisconsin) and east of [Orfordville](/source/Orfordville%2C_Wisconsin). As of the [2020 census](/source/2020_United_States_census), its population was 179.[3]

## History

Hanover was originally called Bass Creek.[4] The present name is after Hanover Green, and Plymouth, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, the native home of a large share of the early settlers.[4] A post office was established as Bass Creek in 1856 and renamed Hanover in 1859; the post office closed in 2014.[5][6] The original town of Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania was named after the German city of Hanover, a principal city of the York-Hanover metropolitan area.
