# Hannah Rickards

**Hannah Rickards** (born 1979) is a British conceptual sound artist.[1] She has won the [Max Mara Art Prize for Women](/source/Max_Mara_Art_Prize_for_Women), the [Philip Leverhulme Prize](/source/Philip_Leverhulme_Prize) in Visual and Performing Arts and the Nigel Greenwood Art Prize.

## Life and work

Rickards was born in 1979 in [Hammersmith](/source/Hammersmith), London.[1] She studied at [Central Saint Martins](/source/Central_Saint_Martins), graduating in 2002. In 2007, she returned to teach there as a lecturer in Fine Art.[2][3][4]

Rickards is a conceptual sound artist. In 2007, Rickards interviewed people from [Alaska](/source/Alaska) who said they could hear the [aurora borealis](/source/Aurora).[1][5] During a solo show at [The Showroom](/source/The_Showroom) gallery in Marylebone, London, she displayed transcripts from her interviews on three monitors in red, green and blue.[5]

Rickards' 2009 two-screen film work *No, there was no red*, was displayed at the [Whitechapel Gallery](/source/Whitechapel_Gallery) before it toured to the [Collezione Maramotti](/source/Collezione_Maramotti) in [Reggio Emilia](/source/Reggio_Emilia), Italy.[6]

Rickards' 2014 exhibition at [Modern Art Oxford](/source/Modern_Art_Oxford) was accompanied by a [monograph](/source/Monograph) examining her artistic practice and with an introduction by Paul Hobson.[7]

After winning the Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2015, Rickards took a two-year [sabbatical](/source/Sabbatical) from teaching at Central Saint Martins, during which time she worked on a new piece at the [Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center](/source/Experimental_Media_and_Performing_Arts_Center), in [Troy, New York](/source/Troy,_New_York), and undertook research trips to the [Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity](/source/Banff_Centre_for_Arts_and_Creativity) in [Banff](/source/Banff,_Alberta), [Alberta](/source/Alberta).[4]
