'''Hanatarashi''' ({{nihongo2|ハナタラシ}}), meaning "sniveler" or "snot-nosed" in Japanese, was a [noise](/source/noise_music) band created by later [Boredoms](/source/Boredoms) frontman [Yamantaka Eye](/source/Yamantaka_Eye) in [Osaka](/source/Osaka), [Japan](/source/Japan) in 1983. The other core member during the early years was later [Zeni Geva](/source/Zeni_Geva) drummer and Boredoms co-founder Ikuo Taketani.<ref name="discogs">[https://www.discogs.com/artist/562361-Ikuo-Taketani Entry at discogs.com]</ref> After the release of the first album, the "I" was dropped and the name became "Hanatarash".

In 1989, [Ron Lessard](/source/Emil_Beaulieau) of [RRRecords](/source/RRRecords) released a Hanatarash demo cassette on vinyl without waiting for the master tape Eye intended to send. This misunderstanding, due to cultural and linguistic differences between the Japanese musician and the American label, became legendary among fans.<ref name=":1" />

The band ceased operations in 1998.<ref name=":2" />

==Live shows==
Hanatarash was notorious for their dangerous live shows. Some of the band's most infamous shows included Eye cutting a dead cat in half with a [machete](/source/machete),<ref name=":2" /> strapping a [circular saw](/source/circular_saw) to his back and almost cutting his leg off, and destroying part of a venue with an [excavator](/source/excavator) by driving it through the back wall and onto the stage.<ref name=":1" /><ref>[http://www5a.biglobe.ne.jp/~gin/rock/japan/hanatarasi/hanatarashi2/hanatarashi2.html A slideshow of photos from the excavator incident]</ref>

Hanatarash was quickly forbidden from performing at most venues.<ref name=":1" /> 

== Music style ==
Hanatarash is affiliated with the Japanoise scene.<ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /> They use a wide range of incongruous objects to make noise, including power tools such as drills and large construction machines.<ref name=":0" /> Despite the spectacular brutality and chaos of their performances, the noise produced by the destruction of unamplified objects is often drowned out by the cries of the audience.<ref name=":1" />
