# Hana Meisel

**Hana Meisel** (Hebrew: חנה מייזל; born 25 December 1883, died 1972) was a Jewish [agronomist](/source/Agronomist), [feminist](/source/Feminist) and [Zionist](/source/Zionist) leader.

## Life

Meisel was born in [Grodno](/source/Grodno) in the [Russian Empire](/source/Russian_Empire) (today Hrodna in [Belarus](/source/Belarus)),[1] and immigrated to [Palestine](/source/Palestine_(region)) in 1909, during the [Second Aliyah](/source/Second_Aliyah), where she became a noted agronomist. Meisel was a founder of *Havat HaAlamot* (Hebrew: חוות העלמות, "the maidens' farm") agricultural school at [Kinneret Farm](/source/Kinneret_Farm) in 1911 (closed in 1917), and of the agricultural school for girls at [Nahalal](/source/Nahalal) (opened in 1929). She studied agriculture and natural science in [Odessa](/source/Odessa), [Switzerland](/source/Switzerland) and [France](/source/France).

Meisel made considerable contributions to the [feminist](/source/Feminist) wing of the [Zionist](/source/Zionist) movement. She was a member of [Poale Zion](/source/Poale_Zion) and was elected to the [Assembly of Representatives](/source/Assembly_of_Representatives_(Mandate_Palestine)).

She was married to Eliezer Shohat, also a well-known figure in the Zionist movement, much like his brother [Israel Shochat](/source/Israel_Shochat).

Hana Meisel died at [Nahalal](/source/Nahalal) in 1972.

Meisel is referenced in [Shmuel Yosef Agnon](/source/Shmuel_Yosef_Agnon)'s fictionalized travelogue of the [Second Aliyah](/source/Second_Aliyah) *HaGalilah* (in English as "To the [Galilee](/source/Galilee)"[2]), published in his posthumous volume *Pithei Devarim*.
