# Hamp Tanner

**Elijah Hampton Tanner** (October 31, 1927 – December 6, 2004) was an American professional [football](/source/American_football) [defensive tackle](/source/Defensive_tackle) who played two seasons in the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL) with the [San Francisco 49ers](/source/San_Francisco_49ers) and [Dallas Texans](/source/Dallas_Texans_(NFL)). He played [college football](/source/College_football) at the [University of Georgia](/source/University_of_Georgia).

## Early life and college

Elijah Hampton Tanner was born on October 31, 1927, in [Nicholls, Georgia](/source/Nicholls,_Georgia).[1] He attended [Lanier High School](/source/Lanier_High_School_(Macon,_Georgia)) in [Macon, Georgia](/source/Macon,_Georgia).[1]

Tanner was a member of the [Georgia Bulldogs](/source/Georgia_Bulldogs_football) of the [University of Georgia](/source/University_of_Georgia) from 1947 to 1950 and a three-year [letterman](/source/Letterman_(sports)) from 1948 to 1950.[1]

## Professional career

Tanner was selected by the [New York Giants](/source/New_York_Giants) in the 30th round, with the 384th overall pick, of the [1950 NFL draft](/source/1950_NFL_draft).[2] He signed with the [San Francisco 49ers](/source/San_Francisco_49ers) on May 25, 1951.[3] He played in 12 games for the 49ers during the 1951 season and scored one safety.[2] The 49ers finished the year second in the National Division with a 7–4–1 record.[4] He was waived in late September 1952.[5]

Tanner was claimed off waivers by the [Dallas Texans](/source/Dallas_Texans_(NFL)) on September 29, 1952.[6] He appeared in ten games, all starts, for the Texans in 1952, recording one fumble recovery and one kick return for 19 yards.[2] The Texans finished the season with a 1–11 record.[7]

Tanner signed with the [Baltimore Colts](/source/Baltimore_Colts) on July 10, 1953.[8] On August 20, 1953, it was reported that Tanner had been released.[9]

## Personal life

Tanner served in the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy).[1] He died on December 6, 2004, in [Winterville, Georgia](/source/Winterville,_Georgia).[1]
