**Hamnsund Church** ([Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language): *Hamnsund kyrkje*) is a [parish church](/source/Parish_church) of the [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway) in [Haram Municipality](/source/Haram_Municipality) in [Møre og Romsdal](/source/M%C3%B8re_og_Romsdal) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). It is located in the village of [Søvik](/source/S%C3%B8vik%2C_Haram). It is the church for the Hamnsund [parish](/source/Parish) which is part of the [Nordre Sunnmøre prosti](/source/Nordre_Sunnm%C3%B8re_prosti) ([deanery](/source/Deanery)) in the [Diocese of Møre](/source/Diocese_of_M%C3%B8re). The white, wooden church was built in a [long church](/source/Long_church) design in 1875 using plans drawn up by the [architect](/source/Architect) Hagbart Brinchmann. The church seats about 350 people.[1][2]

## History

The people of the Søvik area were part of the [Borgund Church](/source/Borgund_Church) parish for a long time. In 1866, it was transferred into the newly created [Vatne Church](/source/Vatne_Church) parish. On 19 April 1873, the parish was given permission to establish a chapel at Søvik. The building was designed by Hagbart Brinchmann and it was constructed by the lead builder Knut Stokkeland. It was [consecrated](/source/Consecrated) in 1875. In 1957, the chapel was expanded and upgraded to the status of a parish church. During the construction, a new [choir](/source/Choir_(architecture)) and [sacristy](/source/Sacristy). Before the addition, the choir was set up in the same room as the [nave](/source/Nave).[3]
