The **Hamilton Project** is an economic policy initiative within the [Brookings Institution](/source/Brookings_Institution).[1][2] It was originally launched in April 2006 by a combination of public policy makers, business people, academic leaders, and other former [Clinton administration](/source/Clinton_administration) economists and experts.[3][4] The Hamilton Project "seeks to advance America's promise of opportunity, prosperity, and growth."[5] It went dormant after U.S. President [Barack Obama](/source/Barack_Obama) assumed office in 2009 because many of its members left to work for the [White House](/source/White_House); however it was relaunched in 2010 with [Michael Greenstone](/source/Michael_Greenstone) as the new director.[6][7]

The Hamilton Project is currently led by Wendy Edelberg, former Chief Economist at the [Congressional Budget Office](/source/Congressional_Budget_Office).[8] Previous directors have included [Jay Shambaugh](/source/Jay_Shambaugh), former Member of the White House [Council of Economic Advisers](/source/Council_of_Economic_Advisers) and a professor of economics and international affairs at the [George Washington University](/source/George_Washington_University);[9] [Peter R. Orszag](/source/Peter_R._Orszag), former Director of the [Office of Management and Budget](/source/Office_of_Management_and_Budget) in the [Obama Administration](/source/Presidency_of_Barack_Obama);[10] [Jason Furman](/source/Jason_Furman), professor of the practice of economic policy at the [Harvard Kennedy School](/source/John_F._Kennedy_School_of_Government);[11] [Douglas W. Elmendorf](/source/Douglas_Elmendorf), Dean of the [Kennedy School](/source/John_F._Kennedy_School_of_Government) at [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University);[12] [Michael Greenstone](/source/Michael_Greenstone), a former chief economist for the President's Council of Economic Advisers;[13] and [Diane Whitmore Schanzenbach](/source/Diane_Schanzenbach), director of the Institute for Policy Research at [Northwestern University](/source/Northwestern_University).[14] The Hamilton Project hosts events and commissions evidence-based policy proposals, reports, and books on topics ranging through economic security, employment, poverty, education, health care, and innovation.[15]
