# Hals Municipality

**Hals Municipality** ceased to exist on 1 January 2007, as a result of Kommunalreformen. It was located in [North Jutland County](/source/North_Jutland_County). The municipality covered an area of 191 km², and had a total population of 11,448 (2005). Its last mayor was Bent Sørensen, a member of the [Social Democrats](/source/Social_Democrats_(Denmark)) (*Socialdemokraterne*) [political party](/source/Politics_of_Denmark). Though [Hals](/source/Hals,_Denmark) was the biggest town, the site of its municipal council was the town of [Gandrup](/source/Gandrup) since the location was more central. Other towns in Hals Municipality were [Vester Hassing](/source/Vester_Hassing), [Ulsted](/source/Ulsted) and [Hou](/source/Hou,_Aalborg) and some minor villages [Stae](/source/Stae), [Øster Hassing](/source/%C3%98ster_Hassing), [Holtet](/source/Holtet,_Denmark), [Gåser](/source/G%C3%A5ser) and [Ålebæk](/source/%C3%85leb%C3%A6k).

Hals municipality ceased to exist due to [*Kommunalreformen* ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007)](/source/Municipalities_of_Denmark#Municipal_Reform_2007). It was merged with [Nibe](/source/Nibe), [Sejlflod](/source/Sejlflod), and [Aalborg](/source/Aalborg) municipalities to form the new Aalborg municipality. This created a municipality with an area of 1,171 km² and a total population of ca. 192,353.
