'''Halley Bay''' was a location on the fast ice on the north-western margin of the [Brunt Ice Shelf](/source/Brunt_Ice_Shelf) in [Coats Land](/source/Coats_Land), [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica). The series of British [Halley Research Station](/source/Halley_Research_Station)s were constructed near here and named after the bay. The original ice bay was transitory and no longer exists although other bays in the same area keep reforming and breaking off as the shelf calves into icebergs. The location contains a {{convert|177|ha|acre|adj=on}} site which has been designated an [Important Bird Area](/source/Important_Bird_Area) (IBA) by [BirdLife International](/source/BirdLife_International) because it supported a breeding colony of about 22,500 [emperor penguin](/source/emperor_penguin)s (estimated from 2009 satellite imagery)<ref name=bli>{{cite web |url=http://datazone.birdlife.org/site/factsheet/brunt-ice-shelf-(halley-bay)-iba-antarctica |title= Brunt Ice Shelf (Halley Bay)|author=<!--Not stated--> |date=2015 |website= BirdLife Data Zone|publisher= BirdLife International|access-date= 26 October 2020|quote=}}</ref> although as of 2019 the colony has dispersed due to repeated failure of the sea ice.<ref name=nature>{{cite journal |title=Massive penguin colony disappears as birds march south|journal=Nature|year=2019|volume=569|issue=7755|page=163|doi=10.1038/d41586-019-01385-2|bibcode=2019Natur.569Q.163.|s2cid=146807468|doi-access=free}}</ref> In addition to the recent seasonal failures of ice the Brunt Ice Shelf is approaching a large calving event which will reshape this section of coast and leave the original location of Halley Bay many kilometers out at sea.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://scitechdaily.com/rapidly-accelerating-crack-brunt-ice-shelf-breaking-up-with-antarctica-this-year|title=Rapidly Accelerating Crack: Brunt Ice Shelf Breaking Up With Antarctica This Year?|date=14 February 2021|website=SciTechDaily|last=Hansen|first=Kathryn|access-date=13 October 2025}}</ref>
