Early in his career, Derwin was a member of a vocal trio with [Lee Gillette](/source/Lee_Gillette) (later a talent scout for [Capitol Records](/source/Capitol_Records)).<ref name=walker>Leo Walker, The Big Band Almanac. Ward Ritchie Press, 1978, p. 96.</ref> In the 1930s, he worked with musicians such as [Boyd Raeburn](/source/Boyd_Raeburn), [Louis Panico](/source/Louis_Panico), [Shep Fields](/source/Shep_Fields), and [Les Brown](/source/Les_Brown_(bandleader)), and formed his own band in [Chicago](/source/Chicago) in 1940 that included [Freddy Large](/source/Freddy_Large) (of [Jan Garber](/source/Jan_Garber)'s band) as a sideman. He toured the Midwest for much of the 1940s, and had several [10-inch single](/source/10-inch_single)s released on Capitol Records after [World War II](/source/World_War_II), including the hit song "[The Old Lamp-Lighter](/source/The_Old_Lamp-Lighter)", which reached number six on the [''Billboard''](/source/Billboard_magazine) chart.
