'''Haig Fras''' is a 45&nbsp;km long submarine [granitic](/source/Granite) rocky outcrop in the southern part of the [Celtic Sea](/source/Celtic_Sea), lying about 95&nbsp;km northwest of the [Isles of Scilly](/source/Isles_of_Scilly). It covers an area of {{convert|356.5|km2|sqmi}}.<ref name="JNCC"/> At one point it reaches within 38 m of the sea surface. It is protected as a [Special Area of Conservation](/source/Special_Area_of_Conservation) (SAC) because of the diverse fauna developed in its [bedrock](/source/bedrock) [reef](/source/reef) habitat. ==Geology==
The Haig Fras [outcrop](/source/outcrop) consists mainly of [granite](/source/granite), forming a WSW-ENE trending elongate [intrusion](/source/intrusion). The granite outcrop is surrounded by an area of [Devonian](/source/Devonian)-[Carboniferous](/source/Carboniferous) [sedimentary rock](/source/sedimentary_rock)s. Evidence from gravity data suggests that the extent of the intrusion is greater than the observed outcrop, based on its association with a linear negative [gravity anomaly](/source/gravity_anomaly).<ref name="Edwards_1984">{{cite book|last=Edwards|first=J.W.F.|title=Variscan Tectonics of the North Atlantic Region |chapter-url=http://sp.lyellcollection.org/cgi/content/abstract/14/1/119|accessdate=10 January 2011|series=Special Publications|volume=14|year=1984|publisher=Geological Society|location=London|chapter=Interpretations of seismic and gravity surveys over the eastern part of the Cornubian platform}}</ref> It is dated at 277 [Ma](/source/Year), [Early Permian](/source/Early_Permian) in age,<ref name="Edwards_1991"/> within the range of intrusion ages for the granites that make up the [Cornubian batholith](/source/Cornubian_batholith). Although the two intrusions have the same trend and are of similar age, they are not thought to be related.<ref name="Edwards_1991"/> In detail, three separate outcrops have been identified using a combination of [radiometric data](/source/radiometric_dating) and seabed sampling. The granite is fine to medium-grained, unlike the [megacryst](/source/megacryst)ic granite typical of the Cornubian batholith intrusions, although this may be due to the low level of sampling available. The granite is thought to be cut by a [swarm](/source/Dike_swarm) of [basic](/source/Mafic) [dykes](/source/dike_(geology)) inferred from magnetic and [seismic reflection data](/source/Reflection_seismology). This swarm is interpreted to be 56&nbsp;km long and 2.5&nbsp;km across and at least six separate intrusive bodies have been identified. ==Fauna==

The bedrock reef at Haig Fras supports a range of fauna. Jewel anemones (''[Corynactis viridis](/source/Corynactis)'') and Devonshire cup corals (''[Caryophyllia smithii](/source/Caryophylliidae)'') are found at the top of the outcrop. Encrusting sponges, [crinoid](/source/crinoid)s and Ross coral ''[Pentapora fascialis](/source/Bitectiporidae)'' are found near base of the outcrop. ==Special area of conservation==
