***Hagbard and Signe*** or ***The Red Mantle***[1] ([Danish](/source/Danish_language): *Den røde kappe*, [Swedish](/source/Swedish_language): *Den röda kappan*, [Icelandic](/source/Icelandic_language): *Rauða skikkjan*) is a 1967 internationally co-produced [drama film](/source/Drama_film) based on the story of [Hagbard and Signy](/source/Hagbard_and_Signy) from the twelfth-century work *[Gesta Danorum](/source/Gesta_Danorum)* by [Saxo Grammaticus](/source/Saxo_Grammaticus),[2] directed by [Gabriel Axel](/source/Gabriel_Axel) and starring [Gitte Hænning](/source/Gitte_H%C3%A6nning). The film was shot in Iceland, with interiors built and filmed in [Nacka](/source/Nacka), [Sweden](/source/Sweden).[3]

## Reception

The film won a Technical Prize (*Mention spéciale du grand prix technique*) at the [1967 Cannes Film Festival](/source/1967_Cannes_Film_Festival).[4] [Roger Ebert](/source/Roger_Ebert) gave the film a full 4 stars out of 4 score in his 1968 review.[5]
