# Hafiz Muhammad Ahmad

**Hafiz Muhammad Ahmad** (also known as **Muhammad Ahmad Nanautawi**) (1862–1928) was an Indian Muslim scholar, who served as the [vice chancellor](/source/List_of_Vice_Chancellors_of_Darul_Uloom_Deoband) of the [Darul Uloom Deoband](/source/Darul_Uloom_Deoband) for thirty five years. He was the [Grand Mufti](/source/Grand_Mufti) of the [Hyderabad State](/source/Hyderabad_State) from 1922 to 1925.

## Early life and education

Ahmad was born in 1862 in [Nanauta](/source/Nanauta) into the [Siddiqi family](/source/Siddiqi_family_of_Nanauta); his father was Islamic scholar [Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi](/source/Muhammad_Qasim_Nanautawi).[1] He attended Madrasa Manba-ul-Ulum in Gulauthi and then [Madrasa Shahi](/source/Madrasa_Shahi) in [Moradabad](/source/Moradabad). He later returned to [Darul Uloom Deoband](/source/Darul_Uloom_Deoband) where he studied with [Mahmud Hasan Deobandi](/source/Mahmud_Hasan_Deobandi). He studied parts of the *[Jami` at-Tirmidhi](/source/Jami%60_at-Tirmidhi)* with [Muhammad Yaqub Nanautawi](/source/Muhammad_Yaqub_Nanautawi) and specialized in [hadith](/source/Hadith) with [Rashid Ahmad Gangohi](/source/Rashid_Ahmad_Gangohi).[2][3] He was a disciple of [Imdadullah Muhajir Makki](/source/Imdadullah_Muhajir_Makki).[4]

## Career

At [Darul Uloom Deoband](/source/Darul_Uloom_Deoband), he taught *[Mishkat al-Masabih](/source/Mishkat_al-Masabih)*, *[Tafsir al-Jalalayn](/source/Tafsir_al-Jalalayn)*, *[Sahih Muslim](/source/Sahih_Muslim)*, *[Sunan ibn Majah](/source/Sunan_ibn_Majah)* for ten years, and served as vice chancellor for 35 years.[5][3] His students included [Anwar Shah Kashmiri](/source/Anwar_Shah_Kashmiri), [Shabbir Ahmad Usmani](/source/Shabbir_Ahmad_Usmani), [Ubaidullah Sindhi](/source/Ubaidullah_Sindhi), [Hussain Ahmad Madani](/source/Hussain_Ahmad_Madani), [Kifayatullah Dehlawi](/source/Kifayatullah_Dehlawi), [Sayyid Asghar Hussain Deobandi](/source/Sayyid_Asghar_Hussain_Deobandi), [Qari Muhammad Tayyib](/source/Qari_Muhammad_Tayyib), [Muhammad Shafi](/source/Muhammad_Shafi), [Manazir Ahsan Gilani](/source/Manazir_Ahsan_Gilani) and [Syed Fakhruddin Ahmad](/source/Syed_Fakhruddin_Ahmad).[6]

Ahmad was honored with the title of Shamsul Ulama by the [British Government of India](/source/British_Raj),[7][8] which he returned in 1920.[9] He also served as the [Grand Mufti](/source/Grand_Mufti) of [Hyderabad State](/source/Hyderabad_State) from 1922 to 1925.[10][9]

## Death and legacy

Ahmad died on 18 October 1928 (Jumad al-Ula 3, 1347 AH) while travelling in a train near [Nizamabad Junction railway station](/source/Nizamabad_Junction_railway_station) and was buried in a special graveyard Khitta-e-Salihin with the consent of [Mir Osman Ali Khan](/source/Mir_Osman_Ali_Khan).[11][12][13] His son [Qari Muhammad Tayyib](/source/Qari_Muhammad_Tayyib) was vice chancellor of [Darul Uloom Deoband](/source/Darul_Uloom_Deoband) for fifty years.[5] His other son was Tahir Qasmi,[14] the father of Pakistani [qaris](/source/Qari) [Shakir Qasmi](/source/Shakir_Qasmi), Waheed Zafar Qasmi and [Zahir Qasmi](/source/Zahir_Qasmi).[15]
