# Hack/reduce

**hack/reduce** is a 501(c)(3) non-profit created to cultivate a community of [big data](/source/Big_data) experts in the [Boston](/source/Boston,_Massachusetts) area.[1] It is located in the historic [Kendall Boiler and Tank Company](/source/Kendall_Boiler_and_Tank_Company) building in [Kendall Square](/source/Kendall_Square) in [Cambridge, Massachusetts](/source/Cambridge,_Massachusetts).

It was founded by serial entrepreneurs [Christopher P. Lynch](/source/Christopher_P._Lynch) and Frederic Lalonde in May 2012.[2] At its founding, hack/reduce raised more than $500,000 from [local venture capital firms](/source/Atlas_Venture) and [Samuel Madden](/source/Samuel_Madden_(computer_scientist)).[2] It has partnerships with [MIT](/source/MIT), [CSAIL](/source/CSAIL), [Bentley University](/source/Bentley_University). and [Harvard](/source/Harvard).[3] Sponsors include [Microsoft](/source/Microsoft), [IBM](/source/IBM), GoGrid, Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, [Dell](/source/Dell), [Atlas Venture](/source/Atlas_Venture), [Bessemer Venture Partners](/source/Bessemer_Venture_Partners), Hopper, Bright Spark Ventures, [Google](/source/Google), and others.[4]

In June 2012, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced the Massachusetts Big Data Initiative which comprised corporate, academic, and government programs as well as a $50,000 grant and the state's support for hack/reduce.[5]
