**Haack** is a German and Dutch [occupational surname](/source/Occupational_surname), deriving from a maker or seller of tools or implements.[1] [Haacke](/source/Haacke) is a variant form.[2] They are derived from the [Old German](/source/Old_German) word *haak*, meaning "[hook](/source/Hook)" or "crook",[3] or the Old German word *hak*, meaning a [hoe](/source/Hoe_(tool)) or [mattock](/source/Mattock). The name is first recorded in the 14th century, in the area around present-day [Saxony](/source/Saxony) and [Thuringia](/source/Thuringia).[1]
