**HR 4458** (**HD 100623**) is a [binary star](/source/Binary_star) [system](/source/System) 31.18 [light-years](/source/Light-year) away in the [equatorial](/source/Celestial_equator) [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Hydra](/source/Hydra_(constellation)). It has the [Flamsteed designation](/source/Flamsteed_designation) **20 Crateris**[20] and the [Gould designation](/source/Gould_designation) **289 G. Hydrae**;[21] the former refers to the constellation [Crater](/source/Crater_(constellation)), since Flamsteed numbered the stars of Crater and the central portion of Hydra as a separate constellation from the other parts of Hydra.[20] This object is visible to the naked eye as a dim, orange-hued star with an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of 5.97.[3] It is moving closer to the Earth with a heliocentric [radial velocity](/source/Radial_velocity) of −22 km/s.[22]

The primary component is a [K-type main-sequence star](/source/K-type_main-sequence_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of K0 V.[6] It is around five billion years old[15] with 90% of the [Sun's mass](/source/Sun's_mass)[10] and 84% of the [Sun's radius](/source/Sun's_radius).[11] The star is radiating 37% of the [Sun's luminosity](/source/Sun's_luminosity)[12] from its [photosphere](/source/Photosphere) at an [effective temperature](/source/Effective_temperature) of 5,241 K.[13] It has been examined for the presence of an [infrared excess](/source/Infrared_excess), but none was detected.[12]

The secondary, designated VB 4, is a 15th-magnitude [white dwarf](/source/White_dwarf) of class DC8 sharing [common proper motion](/source/Common_proper_motion) with the primary.[7][23] The orbital period of the pair is of 1,400 years, albeit with large uncertainty.[10]
