The '''Harry Potter Automatic News Aggregator''', or '''HPANA''', as it is better known, is a ''[Harry Potter](/source/Harry_Potter)'' [fansite](/source/fansite) created in 2002 to monitor news on the Internet about [J. K. Rowling](/source/J._K._Rowling)'s series of novels about the eponymous wizard.

==History==
HPANA is operated by its founder, software developer Jeff Guillaume, and a volunteer staff who monitor and post news items, attend events in order to cover them for the site, and moderate the forums. <!-- It is donation and advertiser supported and originally ran on three physical servers in a Michigan [datacenter](/source/datacenter).{{Citation needed|date=December 2010}}--> Like other ''Harry Potter'' fan sites, HPANA's representatives have been invited to [Leavesden Film Studios](/source/Leavesden_Film_Studios), the permanent set outside London on which the [Warner Bros.](/source/Warner_Bros.) movie adaptations are created, as well as the majority of the [films'](/source/Harry_Potter_(film_series)) red carpet premieres around the world.<ref name=setvisit>{{cite news|url=http://www.hpana.com/news.19577.html|title=Harry Potter 5 filming near completion|date=September 1, 2006|publisher=HPANA}}</ref><ref name=lsj-premiere>{{cite news|url=http://www.lsj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070711/LANSING/707110336/0/special|title=New Harry Potter movie, book make July a banner month for fans|publisher=[Lansing State Journal](/source/Lansing_State_Journal)|date=July 11, 2007|first=Kathleen|last=Lavey|archive-url=https://archive.today/20130128041554/http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070711/LANSING/707110336/0/special&nclick_check=1|archive-date=January 28, 2013|url-status=dead}}</ref> The site was invited in 2007 to an exclusive web cast during which the studio, along with [Universal Orlando Resort](/source/Universal_Orlando_Resort), revealed their intentions to build [The Wizarding World of Harry Potter](/source/The_Wizarding_World_of_Harry_Potter_(Islands_of_Adventure)) theme park, which opened in 2010.<ref name=themepark-hpana>{{cite web|url=http://media.universalorlando.com/hp/webcast.htm |title=The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Announcement Webcast|publisher=[Universal Orlando Resort](/source/Universal_Orlando_Resort)|date=May 31, 2007 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20080803011655/http://media.universalorlando.com/hp/webcast.htm |archive-date = August 3, 2008}}</ref>

The site began working with a travel company in 2003 to offer tours of the [United Kingdom](/source/United_Kingdom) with a Harry Potter focus, dubbed HP Fan Trips. Over 100 people joined its initial trip in 2004 and hundreds more in the years since. A staple of these trips is a ride on [steam locomotive](/source/steam_locomotive) [#5972 Olton Hall](/source/GWR_4900_Class_5972_Olton_Hall), the train used in the Harry Potter films as the [Hogwarts Express](/source/Hogwarts_Express).<ref name=hpft-nytimes>{{cite news|url=https://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C03E5D81239F936A15752C0A9629C8B63&sec=travel&pagewanted=all|title=In Frodo's Footsteps|work=[New York Times](/source/New_York_Times)|date=January 25, 2004|first=Martha|last=Olson}}</ref><ref name=hpft-frommers>{{cite news|url=http://www.frommers.com/articles/2523.html|title=Loved the Book? In July 2005, HPANA and [MuggleNet](/source/MuggleNet) along with publisher Wizarding World Press held ''Spellbound! 2005,'' an event to celebrate the release of ''[Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince](/source/Harry_Potter_and_the_Half-Blood_Prince)'' in [Mt. Prospect](/source/Mount_Prospect%2C_Illinois), Illinois.<ref name=spellbound2005>{{cite news|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/2005/07/15/potter-fans-get-spellbound/|title=Potter fans get Spellbound|work=[Chicago Tribune](/source/Chicago_Tribune)|date=July 15, 2005 | first=Etelka| last=Lehoczky | access-date=2024-02-12}}</ref> More than 10,000 people attended the free event, played games and watched live stage performances while they waited for the midnight book debut.

Rowling in 2011 introduced a companion web site to her books, [Pottermore](/source/Pottermore), by working with HPANA and other fan sites to release clues for fans to discover the name of the new project.<ref name=guardian-pottermore>{{cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/jun/16/harry-potter-jk-rowling-pottermore|title=Harry Potter fans flock to JK Rowling's mysterious new website, Pottermore|work=[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian)|first=Alison|last=Flood|date=June 16, 2011|access-date=December 2, 2014}}</ref> In November 2011, HPANA went offline due to lack of funding. Three years later, the site returned in limited form with access to its news archive.

===Podcast===
The site began featuring ''Hogwarts Radio'' as its official [podcast](/source/podcast) in January 2009, featuring news, analysis and editorial content.<ref name=hogwartsradio-itunes>{{cite web|url=https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/hogwarts-radio/id287732396|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101031062736/http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/hogwarts-radio/id287732396|url-status=dead|archive-date=October 31, 2010|title=Hogwarts Radio (iTunes)|website=[iTunes](/source/iTunes)|access-date=August 5, 2010}}</ref>

==Awards==
J.K. Rowling, upon giving HPANA her "Fan Site Award" in December 2004, said it was the first Harry Potter fan site she ever visited.<ref name=jkr-fansite-award>{{cite news| url=http://www.jkrowling.com/textonly/en/fansite_view.cfm?id=16|title=JK Rowling Fan Site Award|publisher=JKRowling.com|date=December 10, 2004|author=J.K.
