'''HMS ''C37''''' was one of 38 [C-class submarine](/source/British_C-class_submarine)s built for the [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) in the first decade of the 20th century. The boat survived the [First World War](/source/First_World_War) and was sold for [scrap](/source/ship_breaking) in 1919.

==Design and description==
The C-class boats of the 1907–08 and subsequent Naval Programmes were modified to improve their speed, both above and below the surface. The submarine had a length of {{convert|142|ft|3|in|m|1}} [overall](/source/length_overall), a [beam](/source/beam_(nautical)) of {{convert|13|ft|7|in|m|1}} and a mean [draft](/source/draft_(ship)) of {{convert|11|ft|6|in|m|1}}. They [displaced](/source/displacement_(ship)) {{convert|290|LT|t}} on the surface and {{convert|320|LT|t}} submerged. The C-class submarines had a crew of two officers and fourteen [ratings](/source/naval_rating).<ref name=gg9>Gardiner & Gray, p. 87</ref>

For surface running, the boats were powered by a single 12-cylinder<ref>Harrison, Chapter 25</ref> {{convert|600|bhp|lk=in|0|adj=on}} [Vickers](/source/Vickers) [petrol engine](/source/petrol_engine) that drove one [propeller shaft](/source/propeller_shaft). When submerged the propeller was driven by a {{convert|300|hp|0|adj=on}} [electric motor](/source/electric_motor).<ref name=gg9/> They could reach {{convert|13|kn|lk=in}} on the surface and {{convert|8|kn}} underwater. On the surface, the C class had a range of {{convert|910|nmi|lk=in}} at {{convert|12|kn}}.<ref>Harrison, Chapters 3</ref>

The boats were armed with two [18-inch (45 cm)](/source/British_18_inch_torpedo) [torpedo tube](/source/torpedo_tube)s in the bow. They could carry a pair of reload torpedoes, but generally did not as they would have to remove an equal weight of fuel in compensation.<ref>Harrison, Chapter 27</ref>

==Construction and career==
'''HMS ''C37''''' was built by [Vickers](/source/Vickers), [Barrow](/source/Barrow-in-Furness). She was laid down on 7 April 1909 and was commissioned on 31 March 1910. Along with her sisters {{HMS|C36||2}} and {{HMS|C38||2}}, ''C37'' was transferred to Hong Kong in February 1911 to operate with the Royal Navy's [China Squadron](/source/China_Squadron). HMS ''C37'' was sold on 25 June 1919 in Hong Kong.
