# HMCS Montcalm

**HMCS *Montcalm*** is a [reserve](/source/Canadian_Forces_Primary_Reserve#Naval_Reserve) unit of the [Royal Canadian Navy](/source/Royal_Canadian_Navy) based in [Quebec City](/source/Quebec_City), Quebec. As with all Naval Reserve divisions, its approximately 150 sailors specialize in domestic emergency readiness, port inspection diving, naval intelligence, and the recruiting and retention of personnel who supplement the Royal Canadian Navy on board ship and at shore establishments.[1]

## Operations

HMCS *Montcalm'*s personnel provide on-going augmentation to Royal Canadian Navy operations and exercises on ships and at shore establishments on a full- and part-time basis.

Domestically, HMCS *Montcalm* contributes assets in the form of personnel and equipment to [aid to the civil power](/source/Aid_to_the_civil_power) operations. In the past, these have included the [1995 G7 summit](/source/G8) in [Halifax, Nova Scotia](/source/Halifax_Regional_Municipality), the [1997 Red River flood](/source/1997_Red_River_flood), the [1998 ice storm](/source/North_American_ice_storm_of_1998), the 1998 crash of [Swissair Flight 111](/source/Swissair_Flight_111), the [2010 Winter Olympics](/source/2010_Winter_Olympics) in [Vancouver, British Columbia](/source/Vancouver,_British_Columbia), and the 2011 floods on the [Richelieu River](/source/2011_Lake_Champlain_and_Richelieu_River_Floods) in Quebec and throughout [Manitoba](/source/2011_Manitoba_floods_(disambiguation)).

Throughout the Cold War, HMCS *Montcalm* provided hundreds of trained augmentees in support of naval and joint operations, as well as to the [Korean War](/source/Korean_War) and the [First Gulf War](/source/Gulf_War). The unit also provided personnel to the [Afghanistan war](/source/Canada's_role_in_the_Afghanistan_War) and subsequent training mission, and to numerous [United Nations](/source/United_Nations) peacekeeping missions and [NATO](/source/NATO) operations.
