==Function==

[Histone](/source/Histone)s are basic [nuclear protein](/source/nuclear_protein)s that are responsible for the [nucleosome](/source/nucleosome) structure of the [chromosomal fiber](/source/chromosomal_fiber) in [eukaryote](/source/eukaryote)s. This structure consists of approximately 146 bp of DNA wrapped around a nucleosome, an [octamer](/source/octamer) composed of pairs of each of the four core histones ([H2A](/source/Histone_H2A), [H2B](/source/Histone_H2B), [H3](/source/Histone_H3), and [H4](/source/Histone_H3)). The chromatin fiber is further compacted through the interaction of a linker [histone, H1](/source/histone_H1), with the DNA between the nucleosomes to form higher order [chromatin](/source/chromatin) structures. This gene is [intron](/source/intron)less and encodes a replication-dependent histone that is a member of the histone H3 family. Transcripts from this gene lack [polyA tail](/source/polyA_tail)s; instead, they contain a [palindromic](/source/palindromic) termination element. This gene is found in a histone cluster on human [chromosome 1](/source/chromosome_1). This gene is one of four histone genes in the cluster that are duplicated; this record represents the [centromeric](/source/centromeric) copy. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2015].
