**HD 85709** (**HR 3915; 14 G. Sextantis; NSV 18292**) is a solitary [star](/source/Star)[15] located in the [equatorial](/source/Celestial_equator) [constellation](/source/Constellation) [Sextans](/source/Sextans). It is faintly visible to the [naked eye](/source/Naked_eye) as a red-hued point of light with an [apparent magnitude](/source/Apparent_magnitude) of 5.95.[3] The object is located relatively far at a distance of 1,100 [light-years](/source/Light-year) based on [Gaia DR3](/source/Gaia_DR3) [parallax](/source/Parallax) measurements but it is slowly drifting closer with a heliocentric [radial velocity](/source/Radial_velocity) of −0.66 [km/s](/source/Metre_per_second).[9] At its current distance, HD 85709's brightness is diminished with an [interstellar extinction](/source/Interstellar_extinction) of two-tenths of a [magnitude](/source/Magnitude_(astronomy))[16] and it has an [absolute magnitude](/source/Absolute_magnitude) of −1.30.[1]

HD 85709 has a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of M2.5 III,[6] indicating that it is an [evolved](/source/Stellar_evolution) [M-type](/source/M-type_star) [giant star](/source/Giant_star). It is currently on the [asymptotic giant branch](/source/Asymptotic_giant_branch),[5] the point where it is generating energy via the fusion of [hydrogen](/source/Hydrogen) and [helium](/source/Helium) shells around an inert [carbon](/source/Carbon) [core](/source/Stellar_core). Having expanded to 133 times the [radius of the Sun](/source/Radius_of_the_Sun),[10] it now radiates 1,918 times the [luminosity of the Sun](/source/Luminosity_of_the_Sun)[11] from its enlarged [photosphere](/source/Photosphere) at an [effective temperature](/source/Effective_temperature) of 3,622 [K](/source/Kelvin).[12] HD 85709 is metal enriched with an [iron](/source/Iron) abundance 1.58 times that of the [Sun](/source/Sun)'s.[13]

In 1991, [astronomer](/source/Astronomer) V.G. Kornilov and colleagues observed that HD 85709 fluctuated between magnitudes 5.89 and 5.95 in [optical light](/source/Optical_light) during a photometry survey.[4] As of 2004 however, its variability has not been confirmed.[17]
