# HD 64440

**HD 64440**, also known as **a Puppis**, is a [binary star](/source/Binary_star) in the [constellation](/source/Constellation) [Puppis](/source/Puppis_(constellation)). At a moderate brightness of 3.71, it is visible to the [naked eye](/source/Naked_eye).[1] [Parallax](/source/Parallax) measurements give a distance of 108 parsecs (350 light-years).[2]

This is a [spectroscopic binary](/source/Spectroscopic_binary) of the single-lined type, meaning the [spectral lines](/source/Spectral_line) of only a component can be seen in the [spectrum](/source/Stellar_spectrum).[3] The primary has a [spectral type](/source/Spectral_type) of K1.5II,[4] which at first would make it a [bright giant](/source/Bright_giant) star, but this classification is unsupported by its relatively small [absolute magnitude](/source/Absolute_magnitude).[3] The secondary is an early [A-type star](/source/A-type_star).[4] They orbit with a period of about 6.13 years and have a high [eccentricity](/source/Orbital_eccentricity) of 0.667.[3]
