**HD 143009** is a single[6] [star](/source/Star) in the southern [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Lupus](/source/Lupus_(constellation)). It has an orange hue and is visible to the naked eye with an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of 4.99.[2] The star lies at a distance of approximately 380 [light years](/source/Light_year) from the [Sun](/source/Sun) based on [parallax](/source/Stellar_parallax),[1] but is drifting closer with a [radial velocity](/source/Radial_velocity) of −27 km/s.[2] It has an [absolute magnitude](/source/Absolute_magnitude) of −0.64.[2]

This is an [evolved](/source/Stellar_evolution) [K-type star](/source/K-type_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of K0 II-III,[3] displaying a [luminosity class](/source/Luminosity_class) with mixed traits of a [bright giant](/source/Bright_giant) (II) and a [giant star](/source/Giant_star) (III). With the supply of hydrogen at its [core](/source/Stellar_core) exhausted, the star has expanded to 16.8 times the [radius of the Sun](/source/Radius_of_the_Sun). It is radiating 152 times the [Sun's luminosity](/source/Sun's_luminosity) from its enlarged [photosphere](/source/Photosphere) at an [effective temperature](/source/Effective_temperature) of 4,942 K.[1]
