**HD 125040** is a visual [binary star](/source/Binary_star) system in the northern [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Boötes](/source/Bo%C3%B6tes). It appears as a dim point of light near the lower limit of perception with the naked eye, having a combined [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of 6.25.[7] The system is located at a distance of approximately 106 [light years](/source/Light_year) from the [Sun](/source/Sun) based on [parallax](/source/Stellar_parallax) measurements,[12] but is drifting closer with a [radial velocity](/source/Radial_velocity) of −7 km/s.[13] It has a high [proper motion](/source/Proper_motion), traversing the [celestial sphere](/source/Celestial_sphere) at an [angular rate](/source/Angular_rate) of 0.164 arcseconds yr−1.[14]

This was first reported to be a double by [J. F. W. Herschel](/source/John_Frederick_William_Herschel) in 1830. The stars orbit each other with a [semi-major axis](/source/Semi-major_axis) of 122 [AU](/source/Astronomical_unit), a [period](/source/Orbital_period) of roughly 956.6 years, and an [eccentricity](/source/Orbital_eccentricity) of 0.53. They have a combined mass about double that of the Sun.[9] The combined spectral type is of an [F-type main-sequence star](/source/F-type_main-sequence_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of F8V;[6] the brighter primary star has a spectral class of F6V.[15] The system is a source for [X-ray](/source/X-ray_astronomy) emission.[16]
