**HD 117440**, also known by its [Bayer designation](/source/Bayer_designation) **d Centauri**, is a [binary star](/source/Binary_star)[9] system in the southern [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Centaurus](/source/Centaurus). It is visible to the naked eye with a combined [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of 3.90.[1] The distance to this system is approximately 900 [light years](/source/Light_year) based on [parallax](/source/Stellar_parallax) measurements.[2] It is drifting closer to the [Sun](/source/Sun) with a [radial velocity](/source/Radial_velocity) of −2 km/s.[5]

A companion star was first reported by [T. J. J. See](/source/Thomas_Jefferson_Jackson_See) in 1897 at an [angular separation](/source/Angular_separation) of 0.2[″](/source/Second_of_arc) from the primary.[3] [Orbital elements](/source/Orbital_elements) for the pair were published by [W. S. Finsen](/source/William_Stephen_Finsen) in 1962[10] then updated in 1964, yielding an [orbital period](/source/Orbital_period) of 83.1 years with a [semimajor axis](/source/Semimajor_axis) of 0.161″ and an [eccentricity](/source/Orbital_eccentricity) of 0.52.[6] Both components are [evolved](/source/Stellar_evolution) [G-type](/source/G-type_star) [giant stars](/source/Giant_star) with a yellow, Sun-like hue. The primary, component A, has an apparent magnitude of +4.64, while the secondary, component B, has an apparent magnitude of +5.03.[10]
