In its early years, it developed products like a universal remote,<ref>{{Cite web |date=2020-11-02 |title=How Inutamago came to be |url=https://www.hallab.co.jp/eng/company/symbol/about/ |access-date=2026-01-06 |website=HAL Laboratory |language=en}}</ref> the HAL Fax, which allowed users to fax directly from a computer,<ref name=":20">{{Cite book |url=http://archive.org/details/MSX_Magazine_1990-06_ASCII_JP |title=MSX Magazine (JP) |date=June 1990 |publisher=ASCII |pages=118 |via=The Internet Archive}}</ref> and the HAL Catch, a cable that connected an [electronic organizer](/source/electronic_organizer) to a PC.<ref name=":9" /> Other products included the GSX-8800 sound board for the [NEC PC-8001](/source/NEC_PC-8001) in 1983,<ref name=":21">{{Cite web |last=Fujimoto |first=Ken |date=July 13, 2015 |title=追悼：任天堂 岩田聡社長 HAL研究所の天才新入社員と高校2年生の思い出 by 藤本健 |url=https://weekly.ascii.jp/elem/000/002/635/2635125/ |access-date=2026-01-07 |website=週刊アスキー |language=ja}}</ref> the CAT trackball,<ref name=":18">{{Cite book |last= |url=http://archive.org/details/msx-magazine-1984-01-ascii-jp |title=MSX Magazine (JP) |date=January 1984 |publisher=ASCII |pages=60-61}}</ref> and the Hibiki FM tone generator and MIDI interface board in 1986.<ref name=":11" />

There have been conflicting claims on the origin of the company's name: during a [GDC](/source/Game_Developers_Conference) 2005 keynote, HAL alumnus and then-Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated that HAL was named after the computer from ''[2001: A Space Odyssey](/source/2001%3A_A_Space_Odyssey)'',<ref name="GDC2005">{{Cite web|url=https://www.ign.com/articles/2005/03/11/gdc-2005-iwata-keynote-transcript|title=GDC 2005: Iwata Keynote Transcript|last=Casamassina|first=Matt|date=March 10, 2005|website=IGN|access-date=December 6, 2024}}</ref> while in a 2012 [Iwata Asks](/source/List_of_Iwata_Asks_interviews) interview, he said the company was named HAL because "each letter put [them] [one step ahead](/source/Caesar_cipher) of [IBM](/source/IBM)."<ref name=":13" /><ref name=":1" /><ref>{{Cite web |last=Madden |first=Orla |date=30 November 2012 |title=Iwata Explains Where The Name HAL Laboratory Came From |url=http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/11/iwata_explains_where_the_name_hal_laboratory_came_from |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180826081823/http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/11/iwata_explains_where_the_name_hal_laboratory_came_from |archive-date=26 August 2018 |access-date=16 October 2016 |website=nintendolife.com |publisher=[Nintendo Life](/source/Nintendo_Life)}}</ref>

The company first made games for home computers, such as the [MSX](/source/MSX) and [VIC-20](/source/VIC-20). These were initially unlicensed home computer versions of [Namco](/source/Namco)'s arcade games, including ''[Pac-Man](/source/Pac-Man)'' (''Jelly Monsters''<ref name=":13" />) ''[Rally-X](/source/Rally-X),'' and ''[Galaxian](/source/Galaxian)''. However, HAL managed to be the first company to obtain a license from Namco for developing computer games.<ref name=":23">{{Cite web |date=16 February 2004 |title=What Was Japan for Commodore? |url=http://www.commodore.ca/history/people/michael_tomczyk.htm |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180826082008/https://www.commodore.ca/history/people/michael_tomczyk.htm |archive-date=26 August 2018 |access-date=16 October 2016 |website=commodore.ca}}</ref><ref name=":02">{{Cite web |last=shmuplations |date=2022-01-07 |title=Satoru Iwata – 1999 Developer Interview |url=https://shmuplations.com/iwata/ |access-date=2026-01-04 |website=shmuplations.com |language=en-US}}</ref>

Through its connection to Iwasaki Giken, HAL started its business relationship with [Nintendo](/source/Nintendo) in 1984.<ref name=":10" /> It assisted in the development of first-party [Famicom](/source/Famicom) games such as ''[Pinball](/source/Pinball_(1984_video_game))'' and ''[Golf](/source/Golf_(1984_video_game))'', while also creating original titles such as ''[F1 Race](/source/F1_Race)''.<ref name=":02" /><ref name="GDC2005" /> The company's previous experience developing games and its familiarity with the Famicom's CPU helped the developers make games faster than the competition.<ref name=":1" /> In the west, some titles were published under HAL America Inc. (HAI), a North American subsidiary of the company led by Yash Terakura and based in [Beaverton, Oregon](/source/Beaverton%2C_Oregon).<ref>{{Cite web |date=11 May 2007 |title=Yash Terakura Joins Throwback Entertainment As Chief Technology Officer |url=http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/yash-terakura-joins-throwback-entertainment-as-chief-technology-officer |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220122223838/https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/yash-terakura-joins-throwback-entertainment-as-chief-technology-officer |archive-date=22 January 2022 |access-date=16 October 2016 |website=GamesIndustry.biz}}</ref> Between 1987 and 1991, HAL also published several NES titles, including ''[Stargate](/source/Stargate_(1981_video_game))'' and ''[Kabuki: Quantum Fighter](/source/Kabuki%3A_Quantum_Fighter).''<ref name=":2">{{Cite news |last=Crimmins |first=Brian |date=21 November 2017 |title=Why Does HAL Laboratory Only Make Nintendo Games? |url=https://www.vice.com/en/article/hal-laboratory-metal-slader-glory-nintendo-history/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180902223438/https://waypoint.vice.com/en_us/article/ne3mjd/hal-laboratory-metal-slader-glory-nintendo-history |archive-date=2 September 2018 |access-date=1 July 2018 |work=Waypoint |language=en-us}}</ref> [Masahiro Sakurai](/source/Masahiro_Sakurai) joined the company in 1989.<ref name=":12" />
