Species of lichen-forming fungus

Gyalectidium yahriae Scientific classification Kingdom: Fungi Division: Ascomycota Class: Lecanoromycetes Order: Graphidales Family: Gomphillaceae Genus: Gyalectidium Species: G. yahriae Binomial name Gyalectidium yahriae W.R.Buck & Sérus. (2000)

***Gyalectidium yahriae*** is an uncommon species of [crustose lichen](/source/Crustose_lichen) in the family [Gomphillaceae](/source/Gomphillaceae).[1] It occurs in [Florida](/source/Florida) and [Papua New Guinea](/source/Papua_New_Guinea), recorded [growing on bark](/source/Corticolous_lichen) in the former location and on both bark and [on wood](/source/Lignicolous_lichen) in the latter.

## Taxonomy

The lichen was [formally described](/source/Species_description) as a new species in 2000 by William Buck and [Emmanuël Sérusiaux](/source/Emmanu%C3%ABl_S%C3%A9rusiaux). The [type specimen](/source/Type_(biology)) was collected by the first author from [Duette Preserve](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Duette_Preserve&action=edit&redlink=1) in [Manatee County, Florida](/source/Manatee_County%2C_Florida), where it was found growing on [oak](/source/Oak) twigs in sandhill [scrub oak](/source/Scrub_oak). Later examination by the second author revealed that it was the same species previously collected by [André Aptroot](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Aptroot) in a [montane](/source/Montane) forest in Papua New Guinea; this material was collected by Aptroot on decorticated (bark-free) wood. The generic name honours lichenologist [Rebecca Yahr](/source/Rebecca_Yahr), who "very kindly returned to the [type locality](/source/Type_(biology)#type_locality) to collect further material of this new species".[2]

## Description

The lichen forms small, smooth, greenish rounded patches, typically usually 0.4–0.6 cm (0.16–0.24 in) in diameter, with a whitish [prothallus](/source/Prothallus#In_lichens). The species is characterized by [hyphophores](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#hyphophores) that are made of a circle of triangular lobes; additionally, the lichen has masses of [moniliform](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#moniliform) hyphae that make long [cilia](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#cilia) on their outer cells.[2] The hyphophores have been described as resembling "flower vases with a [dentate](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#dentate) edge".[3] The lichen is sterile and so does not produce any [apothecia](/source/Apothecia). The [photobiont](/source/Photobiont) partner is probably a member of [Chlorococcaceae](/source/Chlorococcaceae), a family of [green algae](/source/Green_algae).[2]

## Classification

The lack of ascocarps means that the generic placement of this species cannot be made with certainty, but the authors chose *[Gyalectidium](/source/Gyalectidium)* because of the similarity of its hyphophores with other members of that genus, and because of the intermingling of algae with the moniliform hyphae. They acknowledge, however, that a new genus may need to be created for the [taxon](/source/Taxon) after further studies are conducted.[2] *Gyalectidium yahriae* is one of the few corticolous species in a genus that contains largely [foliicolous lichens](/source/Foliicolous_lichen). A year later, in their world [monograph](/source/Monograph) of *Gyalectidium*, Ferraro and colleagues proposed the [monotypic](/source/Monotypic) [section](/source/Section_(biology)) *Goniolectidium* and series *Yahriae* to contain the species.[3]
