**Gwilym Haydn Jones** (born 20 September 1947) is a British [Conservative](/source/Conservative_Party_(UK)) politician who served as [Under Secretary of State](/source/Parliamentary_Under-Secretary_of_State) in the [Welsh Office](/source/Welsh_Office).

## Early life

Gwilym Jones was born in [Chiswick](/source/Chiswick), London, on 20 September 1947 and moved to Cardiff in 1960. He worked as an [insurance broker](/source/Insurance_broker).[3] When he was 21 he was elected to [Cardiff City Council](/source/Cardiff_City_Council%2C_1905-1974), and is believed to be its youngest ever member. He became deputy leader and acting leader of the Conservative group on the council.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

## Parliament

At the [1983 general election](/source/1983_United_Kingdom_general_election), he was elected as [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) for [Cardiff North](/source/Cardiff_North_(UK_Parliament_constituency)). He retained his seat until the [1997 election](/source/1997_United_Kingdom_general_election),[4] when was defeated by [Labour's](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) [Julie Morgan](/source/Julie_Morgan).[5] Between 1994 and 1997 he served as Under Secretary of State in the Welsh Office.[1]

## Personal life

Jones is active in [freemasonry](/source/Freemasonry).[6][7] His daughter, [Fay Jones](/source/Fay_Jones_(politician)), was [elected in 2019](/source/2019_United_Kingdom_general_election) to serve [Brecon and Radnorshire](/source/Brecon_and_Radnorshire_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) after beating [Liberal Democrat](/source/Liberal_Democrats_(UK)) incumbent [Jane Dodds](/source/Jane_Dodds).[8] In 2023, she was appointed to his previous role as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales.[9]

His wife Linda died on 28 February 2022, aged 75.[10]
