# Gwangpyeong

**Duke Gwangpyeong** (Korean: 광평공; Hanja: 廣平公; 1083–1170[a]), personal name **Wang Won** (Korean: 왕원; Hanja: 王源) was a [Goryeo](/source/Goryeo) royal family member as the grandson of [King Munjong](/source/Munjong_of_Goryeo). He was also a politician and physician who was firstly honoured as **Count Gwangpyeong**.

## Biography

### Early life and relative

Born as the second son of [Wang Do, Duke Joseon](/source/Duke_Joseon) (Korean: 조선공 왕도) who was the eldest son of [King Munjong](/source/Munjong_of_Goryeo) and [Consort Ingyeong](/source/Royal_Consort_Ingyeong_Hyeon-Bi) in 1083, he was named Won (Korean: 원; Hanja: 源). His mother was the second daughter of Yi Jeong (Korean: 이정) from the [Incheon Yi clan](/source/Incheon_Yi_clan).[2] He had an older brother and [a younger brother](/source/Duke_Gangneung) who would become the father of [Queen Janggyeong](/source/Queen_Janggyeong_of_the_Kim_clan),[3] [Queen Uijeong](/source/Queen_Uijeong),[4] and [Queen Seonjeong](/source/Queen_Seonjeong_(Sinjong)).[5]

### Role in the royal court

In 1086 (3rd years reign of [King Seonjong](/source/Seonjong_of_Goryeo)), Wang Won was appointed as *Geomgyosagongjuguk* (Korean: 검교사공주국; Hanja: 檢校司空柱國) and later became *Euncheonggwangnokdaebu* (Korean: 은청광록대부; Hanja: 銀靑光祿大夫) and *Sutaebu* (Korean: 수태부; Hanja: 守太傅).[6]

During the reign of [King Sukjong](/source/Sukjong_of_Goryeo), Wang Won became *Geomgyosaso Susagong* (Korean: 검교사도 수사공; Hanja: 檢校司徒守司空) and *Suchunggongsin Teukjingeomgyotaewi Susado* (Korean: 수충공신 특진검교태위 수사도; Hanja: 輸忠功臣特進檢校太慰守司徒) in 1103.[7] He also received Sukjong's 3rd daughter, [Princess Ansu](/source/Princess_Ansu) as his wife, honoured as Count Gwangpyeong (Korean: 광평백; Hanja: 廣平伯) and promoted into *Gaebuuidongsamsa* (Korean: 개부의동삼사; Hanja: 開府儀同三司) in 1111 (6th years reign of [King Yejong](/source/Yejong_of_Goryeo)).[8] Together, they had a son who would marry Yejong's 2nd daughter, [Princess Heunggyeong](/source/Princess_Heunggyeong).[9]

During the reign of [King Injong](/source/Injong_of_Goryeo), Wang Won became Marquess Gwangpyeong (Korean: 광평후; Hanja: 廣平侯) and later the Duke Gwangpyeong (Korean: 광평공; Hanja: 廣平公) while held the position of *Sutaebo* (Korean: 수태보; Hanja: 守太保).[10]

### Role in religion and medicine

During his lifetime, Wang Won was said to well versed in both of [Confucianism](/source/Confucianism) and [Buddhism](/source/Buddhism), excellent in medicine (Korean: 의술; Hanja: 醫術) and used his ability to widely take care and treat peoples.[11] From a middle age, he fascinated with Buddhism and always read the [Lotus Sutra](/source/Lotus_Sutra) (Korean: 법화경; Hanja: 法華經), which believed that he kept nearly 10,000 copies in his own mansion.[2]

### Death, funeral, and legacy

In 1170 (24th years reign of [King Uijong](/source/Uijong_of_Goryeo)), Duke Gwangpyeong fell ill and died at the age 88 in the private residence of the Buddha (Korean: 불령; Hanja: 佛嶺), which inherited from his mother[11] and then buried at the western of [Baegak Mountain](/source/Bugaksan) foot a year later. There was an "Epitaph of Wang Won" (Korean: 왕원묘지명; Hanja: 王源墓誌銘) that written not long after his death.[12][2]
