Guy Elwin Millard was educated at [Wixenford](/source/Wixenford_School), [Charterhouse](/source/Charterhouse_School), and [Pembroke College, Cambridge](/source/Pembroke_College%2C_Cambridge). He entered the [Diplomatic Service](/source/Her_Majesty's_Diplomatic_Service) in 1939, but served in the [Royal Navy during the Second World War](/source/Royal_Navy_during_the_Second_World_War).[{{London Gazette |issue=34727 |page=7493 |date=7 November 1939}}]
