***Gunplay*** is a [graphic novel](/source/Graphic_novel), written by [Jorge Vega](/source/Jorge_Vega_(comics)), with art by [Dominic Vivona](/source/Dominic_Vivona). It was published by [Platinum Studios](/source/Platinum_Studios) in [2008](/source/2008_in_comics).[1]

## Publication history

Vega, drawing on influences from early [Western](/source/Western_comics) and [war comics](/source/War_comics), as well as literary pairings such as [Huckleberry Finn](/source/Huckleberry_Finn) and [Jim](/source/Jim_(Huckleberry_Finn)), conceived the concept from a combination of the "[Rifleman's Creed](/source/Rifleman's_Creed)" and imagery associated with [Bob Marley](/source/Bob_Marley)'’s "[Buffalo Soldier](/source/Buffalo_Soldier_(song))."

Vage was the winner of the 2007 Platinum Studios [Comic Book Challenge](/source/Comic_Book_Challenge),[2] besting over one million other submissions.[3]

An issue #0 preview [comic book](/source/Comic_book) was released in March [2008](/source/2008_in_comics), which was followed by a [graphic novel](/source/Graphic_novel). [Christopher Priest](/source/Christopher_Priest_(comic_book_writer)) provided prose backup stories in each issue, chronicling the "Legend of Abner."

## Plot

[Buffalo Soldier](/source/Buffalo_Soldier) Abner Meeks is condemned to roam the plains with a demonic gun that forces him to kill someone once a day or suffer soul-searing pain. After inadvertently killing a man, Abner forms an uneasy partnership with the victim’s 14-year-old son, who becomes a moral counterweight during their travels.

### Television series

In 2009, Platinum Studios and [Fox 21](/source/Fox_21_(production_company)) were developing a *Gunplay* series to be written by *[Final Destination](/source/Final_Destination)* and *[X-Files](/source/X-Files)* executive producer Glen Morgan.[4] Platinum Studios' [Scott Mitchell Rosenberg](/source/Scott_Mitchell_Rosenberg) was intended to executive produce.
