{{Short description|Government record of firearms and owners}}
A '''gun registry''' is a government record of firearms and their owners. Not all jurisdictions require gun registration.

==United States==
In the [United States](/source/United_States), there is currently no national gun registry, though there is a [National Instant Criminal Background Check System](/source/National_Instant_Criminal_Background_Check_System) (NICS) that prevents firearm sales to people prohibited under the [Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act](/source/Brady_Handgun_Violence_Prevention_Act). Some states such as Hawaii, have provided the federal government with information on gun owners, and states such as California require a person to register a gun if it falls under a certain class, such as an assault weapon.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/obama-just-got-one-giant-step-closer-towards-creating-a-national-gun-registry/|title=Obama just got one giant step closer towards creating a national gun registry|first=John|last=Lott|date=27 May 2016|publisher=}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=Registration |url=https://giffords.org/lawcenter/gun-laws/policy-areas/owner-responsibilities/registration/ |access-date=2026-01-11 |website=GIFFORDS |language=en-US}}</ref> At the federal level, legislation has been introduced to criminalize creation of a gun registry.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/11/national-gun-registry_n_3060625.html |title=National Gun Registry Creation Carries 15-Year Sentence Under Joe Manchin, Pat Toomey Deal|first1=Amanda|last1=Terkel|first2=Sam|last2=Stein|date=11 April 2013 |publisher=|via=Huff Post}}</ref>

==Canada==
{{see also|Canadian Firearms Registry}}
Firearms classified as restricted (most handguns) and prohibited are required to be registered with the [Canadian Firearms Program](/source/Canadian_Firearms_Program), and the individual requires a restricted (RPAL) and/or prohibited class [firearms licence](/source/possession_and_acquisition_licence) to own and transfer the firearm.

==Australia==
Under [gun laws of Australia](/source/gun_laws_of_Australia), a person is required to have a [firearm licence](/source/firearms_license) to possess or use a firearm. Licence holders must demonstrate a "genuine reason" (which does not include self-defence) for holding a firearm licence<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/#/view/act/1996/46/part2/div2/sec12 |title=Firearms Act 1996 No 46, Part 2, Division 2, Section 12 – Genuine reasons for having a licence|last=|first=|date=|website=NSW legislation|language=en|access-date=2018-02-24}}</ref> and must not be a "prohibited person". All firearms must be registered by [serial number](/source/gun_serial_number) to the owner, who must also hold a firearms licence.

==New Zealand==

[New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand) started its Firearms Registry on 24 June 2023. It is administered by Te Tari Pūreke Firearms Safety Authority, a branch of [New Zealand Police](/source/New_Zealand_Police).<ref>{{cite web |url= https://www.firearmssafetyauthority.govt.nz/about-us |title=About us |work=Te Tari Pūreke Firearms Safety Authority |publisher=[New Zealand Police](/source/New_Zealand_Police) |access-date=21 July 2023}}</ref>
