'''Gummerus Oy''' is a [Finnish](/source/Finland) media [group](/source/Business_group) that was founded in [Jyväskylä](/source/Jyv%C3%A4skyl%C3%A4) in 1872 by [Karl Jacob Gummerus](/source/Karl_Jacob_Gummerus). In 1985, it moved its headquarters from Jyväskylä to [Helsinki](/source/Helsinki). In 2008, it had an annual turnover of EUR 26,9 million. Annually, it publishes approximately 200 new titles, which are sold in [bookstore](/source/bookstore)s, [department store](/source/department_store)s and [book club](/source/Book_discussion_club)s.

Gummerus Oy consists of four divisions:

In December 2009 Gummerus and [Sanoma](/source/Sanoma) agreed on an arrangement concerning the merger of WS [Bookwell](/source/Bookwell) and Gummerus Printing. As a result of the arrangement, Gummerus Oy became a shareholder in the new Bookwell Oy with a 20% holding.

In May 2001 Gummerus Publishers acquired an independent, smaller publishing firm by the name of Ajatus Kustannusosakeyhtiö, and ''Ajatus Kirjat'' remains an editorially independent non-fiction entity within the main publishing firm. Karl Jacob Gummerus, (April 13, 1840 [Kokkola](/source/Kokkola) – March 20, 1898 [Helsinki](/source/Helsinki)) begin to publish ''Kyläkirjasto'' reader in 1872. Karl and his wife Gustava wanted to bring knowledge and joy to folk. Finally he became a writer.
