'''''Gulvain''''' is a  {{convert|55|ft|m|adj=on}} ocean-racing [sloop](/source/sloop) named after the mountain [Gaor Bheinn](/source/Gaor_Bheinn) (or "Gulvain").  Designed by [Jack Laurent Giles](/source/John_Laurent_Giles) for [Jack Rawlings](/source/Jack_Rawlings), she was based on the earlier boats ''[Maid of Malham](/source/Maid_of_Malham)'' and ''[Myth of Malham](/source/Myth_of_Malham)''.  She was built in [Shoreham](/source/Shoreham-by-Sea) by Sussex Shipbuilding Company, owned by Rawlings, and launched on 27 June 1949.  She was made from [Birmabright](/source/Birmabright), making her the first ocean racing yacht to be made from an [aluminium](/source/aluminium) [alloy](/source/alloy).  Aluminium was used for strength, not weight: she displaces {{convert|16.5|LT|kg|lk=on}} and weighs {{convert|23|LT|kg}}, including [ballast](/source/Sailing_ballast).  She was one of the first boats to have a metal [mast](/source/Mast_(sailing)).  Her [hull](/source/Hull_(watercraft)) has a [reverse sheer](/source/reverse_sheer), and she has a [Masthead rig](/source/Masthead_rig).

She proved to be a very successful boat, winning her maiden race from [Cowes](/source/Cowes) to [Dinard](/source/Dinard) and back.  She was forced to retire from the 1949 [Fastnet Race](/source/Fastnet_Race), but performed well in the [Newport Bermuda Race](/source/Newport_Bermuda_Race) in 1950, and was first home in the first postwar [transatlantic race](/source/transatlantic_race) from [Bermuda](/source/Bermuda) to [Plymouth](/source/Plymouth) immediately afterwards.  She was skipped for both races by [Humphrey Barton](/source/Humphrey_Barton), and amongst the crew was [Tim Heywood](/source/Tim_Heywood).  She was bought by [John Tassos](/source/John_Tassos) in 1965, and by [Robert Schyberg](/source/Robert_Schyberg) in 1988.  She was renovated in 1991 and took part in her second Fastnet Race in 1991.
