Hack was born at Childers Street, [North Adelaide](/source/North_Adelaide), eldest daughter of Charles Hack (1842–1915) and Anne Brooks Hack, née Meyrick (1844–1929). She was a granddaughter of [John Barton Hack](/source/John_Barton_Hack).

Hack was in 1887 the winning candidate for the second [Elder Overseas Scholarship](/source/Elder_Overseas_Scholarship) to the [Royal College of Music](/source/Royal_College_of_Music). She formed a women's choir which became part of the musical and social fabric of the Conservatorium.
At least two of her students, [Mary Trenna Corvan](/source/Mary_Trenna_Corvan) and Clara Kleinschmidt (famous as [Clara Serena](/source/Clara_Serena)), were recipients of the same Elder Scholarship.
