**Guillermo Baltazar Chong Díaz** is a Chilean geologist and professor at the [Catholic University of the North](/source/Catholic_University_of_the_North) at [Antofagasta](/source/Antofagasta), Chile. In 2018 he was named distinguished son ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *hijo ilustre*) of [Arica](/source/Arica%2C_Chile).[1] The mineral [chongite](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chongite&action=edit&redlink=1) and the extinct fish *[Chongichthys](/source/Chongichthys)* are named after him.[2][3]

In 2011, together with [Zulma Brandoni de Gasparini](/source/Zulma_Brandoni_de_Gasparini) and others, Chong Díaz discovered a well-preserved fossilized skull of the family [Metriorhynchidae](/source/Metriorhynchidae).[4][5] The team determined it to be a specimen of *[Metriorhynchus](/source/Metriorhynchus) westermanni*, an extinct marine [crocodyliform](/source/Crocodyliformes).[5]
