A [left-hander](/source/left-handed), he appeared in [Major League Baseball](/source/Major_League_Baseball) for the [Boston Red Sox](/source/Boston_Red_Sox) and [Kansas City Athletics](/source/Kansas_City_Athletics) during the 1966 season. Grilli was born in [Memphis, Tennessee](/source/Memphis%2C_Tennessee), where he attended the [University of Memphis](/source/University_of_Memphis). Grilli signed with the Red Sox in 1959 and spent seven seasons working his way through their [farm system](/source/farm_system). In 1965, a stellar season as a [relief pitcher](/source/relief_pitcher) for the [Toronto Maple Leafs](/source/Toronto_Maple_Leafs_(International_League)), champions of the [Triple-A](/source/Triple-A_(baseball)) [International League](/source/International_League), earned him a spot on Boston's 40-man winter roster.
