## Economy

The area once supported shipbuilding and was the site where the [Spanish Navy](/source/Spanish_Navy)'s ship of the line **Princesa** or [HMS Princess](/source/HMS_Princess_(1740)) was built in 1730–1731. However it is the town's name, [El Astillero](/source/El_Astillero), that reflects the shipbuilding industry.

Near the village the modern [Astilleros de Santander](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Astilleros_de_Santander&action=edit&redlink=1) shipyard is located, but performs repairs, conversion and upgrades only.
