# Guangde

**Guangde** is a [county-level city](/source/County-level_city) in the southeast of [Anhui Province](/source/Anhui), People's Republic of China, bordering the provinces of [Jiangsu](/source/Jiangsu) to the north and [Zhejiang](/source/Zhejiang) to the east and south. It is the easternmost [county-level division](/source/County-level_division) of Anhui and is under the jurisdiction of the prefecture-level city [Xuancheng](/source/Xuancheng) within Anhui Province. The city has a population of 510,000[when?] and an area of 2,165 km2 (836 sq mi). The seat of government is at Taozhou Town.

Guangde has jurisdiction over six towns and ten townships.

## Industry

Guangde provides the terrain for the 5.67-square-kilometer [automobile proving ground](/source/General_Motors_Proving_Grounds#Guangde_County.2C_Anhui.2C_China) ([31.044266°N 119.425751°E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=31.044266_119.425751)) with 60 km (37 mi) of test roads, opened on September 22, 2012, and managed by [Shanghai GM](/source/Shanghai_GM) and the [Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center](/source/Pan_Asia_Technical_Automotive_Center) (PATAC), both [joint ventures](/source/Joint_venture) of [SAIC Motor](/source/SAIC_Motor) with [GM China](/source/General_Motors#Asia).[2][3]

## Chinese manned space program

On July 19, 1964, China launched and recovered its first successful experimental biological rocket carrying eight white mice from the [Chinese Academy of Sciences](/source/Chinese_Academy_of_Sciences) [Base 603](/source/Base_603) launch site in [Shijie Town](/source/Shijie,_Anhui) (誓节镇) within the city.[4]

## Culture

Prior to the late 19th century, most residents spoke a [Jianghuai Mandarin](/source/Jianghuai_Mandarin) dialect. Thereafter many people in the southern and eastern parts of the city began to speak [Old Guangde dialect](/source/Old_Guangde_dialect), a [Taihu](/source/Taihu_Wu) [Wu Chinese](/source/Wu_Chinese) dialect closely related to that of [Suzhou dialect](/source/Suzhou_dialect) and [Shanghainese](/source/Shanghainese). Most residents also speak the [Southwestern Mandarin](/source/Southwestern_Mandarin) [Guangde dialect](/source/Guangde_dialect).
