He soon went on to play for the [Chinese National Junior Team](/source/China_national_under-20_football_team) before Gu went on to see his club win the Chinese league title at the end of the 1979 league season before being called up to the [Chinese national team](/source/China_national_football_team) for the first time.[4] With the national team he went on to be in the squads that took part in the [1980](/source/1980_AFC_Asian_Cup) and [1984 AFC Asian Cup](/source/1984_AFC_Asian_Cup) third placed team, while also participating in the [1982](/source/1982_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_(AFC_and_OFC)) and the [1986](/source/1986_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_(AFC)) [FIFA World Cup](/source/FIFA_World_Cup) qualifications.
