The **Greta River** is a river in the [Hurunui District](/source/Hurunui_District) of [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand). It flows north-east into the [Hurunui River](/source/Hurunui_River), which runs into the [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean) south of [Cheviot, New Zealand](/source/Cheviot%2C_New_Zealand). [State Highway 1](/source/New_Zealand_State_Highway_1) follows the river for part of its route between Cheviot and [Waipara](/source/Waipara). The locality of [Greta Valley](/source/Greta_Valley) is to the east of the Greta River on the banks of the [Waikari River](/source/Waikari_River_(Canterbury)).[1] The river was named by local [runholders](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/runholder) Sir [Charles Clifford](/source/Sir_Charles_Clifford%2C_1st_Baronet) and Sir [Frederick Weld](/source/Frederick_Weld) in the 1850s after the [Greta River](/source/River_Greta%2C_Durham) in Yorkshire.[2]
