'''Greipstad''' is a [former municipality](/source/List_of_former_municipalities_of_Norway) in the old [Vest-Agder](/source/Vest-Agder) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The {{convert|104|km2|adj=on}} municipality existed from 1913 until its dissolution in 1964 when it became part of [Songdalen](/source/Songdalen) municipality. The [administrative centre](/source/administrative_centre) of the municipality was the village of [Nodeland](/source/Nodeland) where the [Greipstad Church](/source/Greipstad_Church) is located. The municipality is located in the northern part of the present-day municipality of [Kristiansand](/source/Kristiansand) in [Agder](/source/Agder) county.<ref name="snl">{{Cite web |last=Store norske leksikon |author-link=Store norske leksikon |title=Greipstad – tidligere kommune |url=https://snl.no/Greipstad%2Ftidligere_kommune |access-date=2017-01-03 |language=no}}</ref>

==History==
The municipality of Greipstad was established on 1 July 1913 when it was separated from the municipality of [Søgne](/source/S%C3%B8gne) to form a municipality of its own. Initially, the municipality had a population of 822 residents. During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the [Schei Committee](/source/Schei_Committee). On 1 January 1964, the municipality of Greipstad (population: 2,061) was dissolved and it was merged with most of the neighboring municipality of [Finsland](/source/Finsland_(municipality)), excluding the area around Kleveland bru, (population: 797) and with the Eikeland area of [Øvrebø](/source/%C3%98vreb%C3%B8) municipality (population: 39) to form the new municipality of [Songdalen](/source/Songdalen).<ref name="Dag">{{Cite book |last=Jukvam |first=Dag |year=1999 |title=Historisk oversikt over endringer i kommune- og fylkesinndelingen |url=http://www.ssb.no/emner/00/90/rapp_9913/rapp_9913.pdf |publisher=[Statistisk sentralbyrå](/source/Statistics_Norway) |language=no |isbn=9788253746845}}</ref>

===Name===
The municipality (originally the [parish](/source/prestegjeld)) is named after the old ''Greipstad'' farm ({{langx|non|Greipsstaðir}}) since the first [Greipstad Church](/source/Greipstad_Church) was built there. The first element is the old male name {{lang|non|Greipr}}. The last element is the plural form of {{wikt-lang|non|staðr}} which means "place" or "[abode](/source/abode)".<ref name="snl" /><ref>{{Cite book |last=Rygh |first=Oluf |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Mt1LAQAAIAAJ |title=Norske gaardnavne: Lister og Mandals amt |date=1912 |publisher=W. ==Government==
While it existed, this municipality was responsible for [primary education](/source/primary_education) (through 10th grade), outpatient [health services](/source/Health_care), [senior citizen](/source/old_age) services, [unemployment](/source/unemployment), [social services](/source/Social_work), [zoning](/source/zoning), [economic development](/source/economic_development), and municipal [road](/source/road)s. During its existence, this municipality was governed by a [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council_(Norway)) of [directly elected](/source/Direct_election) representatives. The [mayor](/source/mayor) was [indirectly elected](/source/Indirect_election) by a vote of the municipal council.<ref name="ks">{{Cite encyclopedia |title=kommunestyre |encyclopedia=[Store norske leksikon](/source/Store_norske_leksikon) |publisher=[Kunnskapsforlaget](/source/Kunnskapsforlaget) |url=https://snl.no/kommunestyre |access-date=2023-08-03 |date=2022-09-20 |editor-last=Hansen |editor-first=Tore |language=no |editor2-last=Vabo |editor2-first=Signy Irene}}</ref>
